  • Preparations

This week has gone by SO fast. We had lots to do to catch up from being gone last week and also to prepare for the kids' arrival on Saturday! Monday morning I got the laundry started and went for a walk - it was so nice to do that again. That afternoon I had a dental appointment because one of my crowns came OFF while I was in El Valle!!! Scared me because I thought at any moment it would start being very painful but it never was. When the dentist looked at it, he reminded me I had had a root canal there so that explained the lack of pain. They told me they would try to work me in on Wednesday because he is only in the office 3 days a week and Friday would be a holiday!

Another thing that somehow happened between here and the trip to El Valle was the loss of my phone charger. It is still a mystery. When I looked for it the first night at the hotel, it was not there. I just figured I somehow forgot to pack it. However, upon returning home it was not in its normal place which told me I at least intended to pack it. I searched every where, checking all the outlets to see if I left it plugged up, to no avail. It is very strange because I am very much a creature of habit and really try to put things in their place. Rick graciously just decided to get me another phone since I had been having problems with mine shutting down and not being able to make calls at the most inconvenient times. We bought it when we arrived here in January, 2012 and only paid $20 so I guess I got my money's worth out of it. Here they are side by side:

You can see how basic the one on the right was and that did not bother me. I could make calls and text and I was happy. However there is a very popular thing here called WhatsApp that almost everyone uses for messages, especially students. We felt like I needed that feature and of course to get that, I also got a phone that does a lot of other things. The nice thing is data here is optional. You can have it for a month for $15 and just get it when you want or need it. So much more reasonable than the U.S. WhatsApp will work on WiFi. So I've spent some time this week getting used to the new phone.

We looked over at the building next to us one evening and saw this:

I am sure you can't see very well but there are two men standing on the arm of that crane....WAY up in the air....SO high up....we surely were hoping they had a safety cable on them. I just don't know how people do that!

Tuesday I got our prayer letter out and met a friend for lunch. That evening I worked hard on my inbox and now I finally have it down to 20 which is good because it will fill up again next week. ☺

Wednesday Rick and I hung many pictures in our apartment. One day soon I will make some photos - need to surprise some folks first. Then I went back to the dentist and he put the crown back on my tooth. He was really nice and I was very appreciative of the great service they did to work me in. However I did feel I had gone back in time 20 years!! I am also VERY appreciative of our great dentist in Cleveland and the way he keeps up with the very latest technology and seeks to make every experience better than the last! And yes I wrote him and thanked him!!!

Today was our missionary prayer meeting. I always enjoy that time so much. It's just so great to pray for our coworkers, their ministries and their families! I wish you could know each of them! Then Rick and I got some lunch and I ran in PriceSmart for a few grocery items....me and few hundred other people!!! Everyone had the same idea since tomorrow is a holiday and Easter is coming!!! There was no place to park so Rick circled while I found a spot in the LONG checkout lines! Then we got in some major traffic coming home. Schools and some official offices let out at noon for the holiday!!! The streets were jammed!

When we got back to the house and unloaded those things into the frig, I left one more time for the grocery store expecting to be caught in some really bad traffic again. It was extremely busy on the last street where the store was but I have learned a lot about maneuvering through cars and got to the store successfully. By the time I finished, it was a lot calmer and I had a great drive home.

Then I prepped the food that I could, put all the rest away, and make a list for the next two days of preparation. Those three special ones will be walking off the plane Saturday. I can't wait!!!!!!

  • A Divinely Scheduled Visit

On Sunday I received the news that my uncle Junior had passed away in Alabama. You may recall he is the one that Joyce and I visited in December:

Here we are with his daughter and two of his three sons:

His wife, Martha, is in this photo:

It had been YEARS since I had seen him. While we are in the U.S., it's just hard to make the longer trips to visit everyone. However, about 2 months before Christmas, I knew he had been diagnosed with cancer and I strongly felt I should go. When Joyce said she could go with me, the deal was sealed. To make it even more special, the day we planned to do it turned out to be his 84th birthday!!! SO we took balloons and some things from Mercier's orchards and had the BEST visit.

Junior was the youngest of the 8 children. He was in the navy as a young man, came home and married his sweetheart and then had 4 children between the ages of my two middle brothers, Freddie and Steve. However, they did not live close to us while we were growing up so we saw them very seldom. Junior spent many of his last years in the home for veteran's after complications from an accident left him unable to walk. That would have made so many men bitter but not him. I think everyone in that place knew him and those that knew him, loved him!!! He was always so jolly, always had a big smile on his face, was gentle spoken and genuinely cared about people. He showed true love to everyone. I will always remember him as an example for facing difficulties.

His wife and children will miss him so!

However they have the absolute assurance that he is in Heaven with his Savior, his parents and 6 of his siblings! What a joyful reunion that must have been! He was very loved by his brothers and sisters and by the rest of us, too!

The funeral is tomorrow and I so wish I could be there. However, I have peace and feel very happy that I saw him while he was alive, could tell him that I love him, and have that beautiful memory to hold on to!

So let's all make an effort to visit our loved ones while we have the opportunity. I know I have missed out on some of these times while we have lived away but I am doing my best to make an intentional effort to not miss any more than I have to!
